MRI services now available

We are now able to offer the first high-field MRI service in Western Australia for small animals. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for imaging soft tissues, such as the brain and spinal cord, as it allows for superior imaging of these areas compared to CT and conventional radiography. The Animal Hospital’s 1.5 Tesla MRI machine is engineered with high density coils, which provide premium quality images with enhanced contrast and reduced blurring. With the ability to image patients from the size of a Chihuahua to a Great Dane with no reduction in quality, patients will be able to undergo same-day MRI imaging in order to achieve better diagnostic outcomes and treatment plans. In partnership with our radiology specialists at Vet Imaging Specialists, the Animal Hospital is now also accepting referrals for MRI scans.

The Animal Hospital Blood Bank

Just like humans, if animals lose blood due to trauma, become anaemic, undergo major surgery, or get cancer, they can require a blood transfusion to survive. The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University operates a fully-stocked dog and cat blood bank program, providing small animal veterinary patients with the best possible transfusion care.

The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University treats many critically ill animals at our emergency clinic and the availability of blood often means the difference between life and death. We are always looking for cat and dog donors to help save the lives of other animals.

All potential cat and dog donors receive a comprehensive health screen prior to being accepted onto the program. As part of the program, each donor must have an initial routine blood screen, followed by a yearly test. This is essential for the safety of the donor and to ensure a safe product for the transfusion recipient. Cats and dogs can donate blood every 8–12 weeks.
